The New 500 continues to rake in international awards: named "Car of the Year and Best Small Electric Car" in the UK and "Green Car 2020" in France

  • FCA’s first full-electric car adds two more awards to its trophy haul, with a total of 4 acknowledgments received in Europe to date.
  • In France, the New 500 won the “Green Car” award at the 2020 Automobile Awards and in the UK, it was named “Car of the Year and Best Small Electric Car” by DrivingElectric.
  • The trophy haul includes the highly prestigious “Red Dot Design Award”, conferred by an international jury, and the title of “Best Design 2020” from the German magazine “Auto Motor und Sport”.
A few weeks after its presentation to the international press, the New 500 continues to captivate the European public, achieving a double win – first in France, then in the UK – further improving a trophy haul that already includes “Green Car” at the Automobile Awards 2020, plus “Car of the Year and Best Small Electric Car” bestowed by DrivingElectric, to join the “Best Design 2020” award from the German magazine “Auto Motor und Sport” and “Best Design Concept” in the internationally renowned “Red Dot Design Awards”.

In France, the New 500 won “Green Car” at the Automobile Awards 2020, an acknowledgment bestowed by a jury of experts from the automotive industry, fans and end consumers, counting among its members the guest of honor, the actor and comedian Arnaud Ducret. The new model has also won an award in the UK for the first time: the prestigious “Car of the Year and Best Small Electric Car”, given by the “DrivingElectric” specialist website, where it was appreciated for its elegant design, technology, usable range of up to 320 km and the price of its entry-level Action trim.

This double win comes after the two other coveted awards it has recently received in Germany. The first was in October, when the New 500 took a “Red Dot Award 2020” – one of the most coveted prizes in the world of industrial design – in the Design Concept category. The jury consisted of 21 of the most renowned design professionals and lecturers in the world, having considered over 4,100 candidates from 52 countries this year.

It was met with the same success one month later with the title of “Best Design 2020” in its category, conferred by readers of the German magazine “Auto Motor und Sport”, who cast their votes in the ”Autonis 2020” contest. The New 500 has therefore taken one of the most prestigious acknowledgments in the world of design, beating off competitors with a conventional combustion engine, thanks to its unique and distinctive style that continues to amaze and enchant.

Four prestigious awards, confirmation that the New 500 is revolutionizing the world of electric mobility in terms of technology and design.
FCA’s first 100% electric car, it still remains a true 500. The 42-kW battery guarantees extended range, up to 320 km in the WLTP cycle, increasing to 450 km in the urban cycle, and comes with an 85-kW battery charger as standard in both the Passion and Icon versions. It only takes 5 minutes to charge it up to drive 50 kilometers, more than necessary for average daily use. The fast charger can also charge the battery to 80% in just 35 minutes. In terms of performance, the batteries are combined with an 87-kW (118-hp) electric motor, delivering an automatically limited maximum speed of 150 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds and from 0 to 50 km/h in 3.1 seconds.

The 500 also comes with Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), making it easier, safer, simpler and more fun to drive, as well as being the first car in its segment equipped with level 2 autonomous driving. But FCA’s engineers didn't stop there. Their aim was to humanize the technology, by implementing specific solutions tailor-made for the 500: from advanced driver-assistance features to control the car longitudinally and laterally to sensors that detect whether the driver has their hands on the steering wheel. Risk level monitoring is therefore much more accurate, meaning we could make the automatic warnings less intrusive. And there’s more: ‘Lane Centering’ keeps the New 500 in the center of the lane, whereas ‘Urban Blind Spot’ uses ultrasonic sensors to monitor blind spots and warn of any obstacles with a triangular warning light on the wing mirror. At the same time, the eleven 360° sensors provide a ‘drone view’ to avoid any obstacles when parking or performing complex maneuver: almost a bird’s eye view of any obstacles in your path.

The New 500 is also the most connected car ever. The proof is in the new fifth-generation UConnect 5 infotainment system – the connected platform created by FCA for the future, available with a 7” screen in the PASSION version and 10.25” in the ICON – with a custom interface and the advanced voice recognition system, activated hands-free with the wake word “Hey Fiat”. Connectivity features are enabled by the new UConnect Box, offering access to the New 500’s “UConnect Services”, one example of which transforms the car into a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect up to 8 devices at the same time. These connectivity services are usually reserved for higher segments, but for the first time Fiat makes them accessible on an A-segment car, with features developed specifically for the world of electric vehicles.

The New 500 is available in hatchback and cabriolet versions, plus the brand-new 3+1 variant, featuring a third small passenger side door.

Amazon’s Alexa Voice Experience Now Available on FCA’s New Fiat 500

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Amazon continue to strengthen their strategic engagement with the introduction of the Alexa voice experience embedded in the New Fiat 500, complemented by the new MyFiat Connected Car Skill. With Alexa Built-in, occupants can ask Alexa to play music, hear the news, check weather, control smart home devices, access tens of thousands of Alexa skills, and more. The integration, offered as part of FCA’s Uconnect™ Services offering, is first available to customers in Italy, with new models continuing to roll out through 2021 in Austria, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The launch of the Alexa on the New Fiat 500 represents the next step in the global collaboration between FCA and Amazon. FCA customers were initially introduced to Alexa through FCA’s custom Alexa Connected Car Skills, including MyJeep and MyAlfa, which allows customers with Alexa-enabled devices at home to easily ask Alexa to check the battery level of the car, lock/unlock doors, and more. The integration of Alexa on the Uconnect Services suite deepens the experience by bringing Alexa into the vehicle itself—delivering the ideal experience for customers. The integration of the Alexa voice experience is part of FCA’s broader investment in developing current and future services for the connected car. With Alexa in the vehicle, customers can enjoy a seamless, personalized voice experience across all of their devices, both at home and on-the-go. Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat, Lancia and Abarth brands, commented: “The New 500 is the first FCA car “100% born electric” and, beyond being an iconic car since 1957, the third generation of Fiat 500 aims at being as well a benchmark in terms of technology for the next decade, combining a unique style with a state-of-the-art level of connectivity. The New 5oo is simple and intuitive with, cherry on the cake, the on board “virtual” assistant to respond to in-car commands. Simply saying “Hey Fiat”, it is able to communicate in real time with home automation systems, listen to the music and much more, in the end, staying connected and driving safely. To partner with Amazon and get Alexa on board was the most natural choice for Fiat. Ned Curic, Vice President of Alexa Automotive at Amazon, commented: “The New Fiat 500 strikes an impressive balance of offering the latest in-cabin technology that drivers expect, while remaining an iconic city car. FCA customers already love using Alexa at home, and now they can take Alexa wherever they go—making it easier than ever to navigate, stay connected, and be entertained, while staying focused on the road ahead.”

How does the on-board Alexa service work?

Alexa is the intelligent cloud-based voice service that you can talk to on your connected New Fiat 500 using simple voice commands—just ask Alexa to play music, hear the news, check the weather, control smart home devices, and more. Alexa is always getting smarter, with new capabilities and features made available to customers all the time.

How does the MyFiat connected car skill work?

From the comfort of your home, use the MyFiat connected car skill on your Alexa device at home and the Uconnect Services suite to remotely control your New Fiat 500. Just by asking Alexa, you can remotely lock/unlock your doors, find out how much battery charge you have left, send destinations to your vehicle, search for Points of Interest, and more.

    Abarth, a year of successes

    • For Abarth, 2020 was a year of successes: in racing, the Abarth 124 rally won the FIA R-GT Cup – basically the Gran Turismo world championships – for the third year running.
    • Italian and German F4 Championships powered by Abarth: a story of success and promotion of young talents continues.
    • In the Italian F4 championship, the young Gabriele Minì was the first Italian to win in the competition’s history.
    • Commercial successes, too: market share is up almost 50% compared to 2019, setting an all-time record, and the 595 Scorpioneoro and 595 Monster Energy Yamaha have reached 80% of sales outside the domestic Italian market.
    • In addition to its road victories, the Abarth Digital Day won the brand the Guinness World Record™ for the largest digital gathering ever.
It was a 2020 full of satisfaction for the Abarth brand, which has recorded major sporting triumphs in rallies and on the track, as well as commercial successes with its latest special series.
Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat, Lancia & Abarth Brands: “We are proud to celebrate victory for the third year running in the FIA R-GT Cup with the Abarth 124 rally – basically the Gran Turismo world championships, driven by Italy’s Andrea Mabellini. The Italian driver also won the 2020 Abarth Rally Cup. After winning three championships running, the 124 remains the car to beat in the R-GT class, with over 100 victories. I’d also like to congratulate Gabriele Minì, a young national talent, a promise for international motorsport and the first Italian to win this country’s F4 championship, and Jonny Edgar, winner of the German F4 championship.”The promotion of young talents – just think, as many as 7 of the top 10 in the F4 championship rankings are newcomers, including Minì – and motorsport form part of Abarth’s history. In particular, racing has always been the best and the toughest testing ground, to put engines and technology solutions through their paces under extreme conditions, to increase performance and reliability both in races and in models in mass production, the latter courtesy of technology transfer.”
Despite the complex period, Abarth also stands out for very interesting results in the commercial domain. The launch of the two special series, limited to 2000 units each, the 595 Scorpioneoro and the 595 Monster Energy Yamaha, was a success, and results were seen of a market share increasing around 50% compared to 2019, as well as over 80% of sales being outside Italy.Taking these successes as a starting point, the Scorpion brand is now therefore ready to accept the new challenges of both motorsport and the international market by continuing  the refresh of its line-up in 2021: new colors, new finishes and new details to emphasize the brand's dual souls – style and performance. The new line-up will soon be unveiled, and will be in all dealerships from February. Abarth will also consolidate its commitment to racing by taking part in the Formula 4 championships, with the aim of exporting this winning format to the most interesting foreign championships, from both a sporting and a competitive point of view. The collaboration with private rally teams will also continue as part of the Abarth Customer Sport project, with technical and technology support in the pit.
New Abarth 595 Scorpioneoro and Abarth 595 Monster Energy Yamaha, the dual souls of the Abarth brand
Technology transfer from racing to mass production can be clearly seen in the two Abarth 595 Scorpioneoro and Abarth 595 Monster Energy Yamaha special series launched in September, both equipped with the 1.4-liter Abarth T-Jet engine, also the basis for the Formula 4 single-seaters. The two new models epitomize the brand's dual soul, as well as two of its fundamental values: Heritage and Fun, respectively.
The adrenaline-packed Abarth 595 Monster Energy Yamaha series is the perfect expression of the Scorpion and Yamaha brands' shared values, rooted in performance, racing, technology and fun. Produced in a limited edition of 2,000 units, the new model draws its inspiration from the livery and interiors of the YZR-M1 Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP 2020, with the “Monster claw” added to the bonnet as a tribute to the new collaboration with the renowned energy drink. The relationship with Yamaha has lasted since 2015, and with the launch of this new special series, the bond is strengthened, based on its ability to overcome sporting and racing barriers by “going down into the streets” with many adrenaline-packed special series: the Abarth 595 Yamaha Factory Racing Edition (2015), the two-seater Abarth 695 biposto Yamaha Factory Racing Edition (2015), and finally, the Limited Edition Abarth 695 XSR Yamaha (2017).
The second special series, the exclusive Abarth 595 Scorpioneoro, is a limited edition of just 2,000 models that pays homage to and draws inspiration from the exclusive A112 Abarth “Gold Ring”, better known to fans as the A112 Abarth “Targa Oro”. A truly exclusive car, only 150 models of which were produced in 1979, all featuring a black livery, golden details, sophisticated interiors and a wide range of equipment as standard, in line with the Italian tradition of “granturismo” cars.

The sporting successes of the 2020 season
Among the major triumphs of last season, the standouts include the Scorpion brand’s third victory running in the FIA R-GT Cup, won by the young Italian Andrea Mabellini, paired with Virginia Lenzi in a Bernini Rally team car. In 2018, it was the Frenchman Raphaël Astier who won this prestigious title, whereas in 2019, it was Italy’s Enrico Brazzoli. Mabellini also won the 2020 Abarth Rally Cup, the one-make championship for drivers in the running for the Europeans on board the Abarth 124 rally models.

Pure adrenaline also in the F4 championships “powered by Abarth” in Germany and Italy, the schedules of which were intertwined and alternated, where the single-seaters powered by the Abarth engine saw a total of 18 different winners and 23 drivers taking to the podium. But by the end of the championships, they only had one winner each. In Italy, for the first time in 7 editions, an Italian was the winner: the 15-year-old Gabriele Minì, having racked up 4 victories and 15 point-scoring placings, won the series a weekend in advance. The emotions were just as strong in the German F4 championship, won by the 16-year-old Briton Jonny Edgar. During the season, he achieved 6 victories and 13 placings, winning the title in the last race after a close battle with the American Jak Crawford and Finland’s Elias Seppänen, the other two contenders. The common thread that binds the two championships is the 1.4-liter, 160-hp Abarth T-Jet engine, which proved its great performance and reliability.Established in 2014, based on an idea of FIA President Jean Todt’s, Formula 4 selected Abarth as the technical partner to supply its engines. Courtesy of its great weight-to-power ratio, the powerful and reliable 1.4-liter, 160-hp Abarth Turbo engine fitted to the Tatuus single-seaters guarantees high performance (a maximum speed of 240 km/h; 0-100 km/h acceleration in around 5 seconds). Its renowned reliability also means the cost of a season in terms of the teams and drivers can be kept under control. It therefore meets the FIA requirement of training for the Formula class drivers of the future, and is sustainably so thanks to the lower cost per season, in line with the FIA’s and Abarth’s values of developing young talents. Since 2014, more than 350 drivers have taken to the track to prove their mettle. In some cases, they have reached the summit of their specialism, for example Lance Stroll, the first winner of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth in 2014, who is now a Formula 1 driver. Germany’s Mick Schumacher, son of former Ferrari driver Michael, also raced in F4 in 2016 and won the Formula 2 World Championship last year.

    Success on digital platforms too
The extended family of the Abarthisti fandom continues to give its usual warm welcome, even last year when the Abarth Day event was held in a virtual guise. Indeed, its Community has enabled Abarth to achieve a Guinness World Record™. Abarth’s people gathered on the Web for a spectacular online event, one that became the largest digital gathering in the world courtesy of the participation of all its fans, who uploaded 868 photos of their Abarth cars to the specially created Facebook page, within one hour: this was the record set by the Abarth Digital Day.

Alfa Romeo Tonale wins the popular vote at What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2021

    • Alfa Romeo Tonale wins ‘Reader Award’ at What Car? Car of the Year 2021 awards
    • Voted for by readers of What Car? to crown the most exciting new car of 2021
The Alfa Romeo Tonale has won the Reader Award at this year’s influential What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2021. The only award voted for by readers of the UK’s leading car buying brand, the Reader Award determines the most exciting new car of 2021 as judged by the very people who buy them.

Having made its international debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Tonale builds on 110 years of Alfa Romeo heritage and has captured car buyers attention ahead of the unveil of the final production model later this year.

What Car editor-in-chief, Steve Huntingford, said “The What Car? Reader Award is often closely fought, but this year the Tonale ran away with it, garnering more than twice as many votes as the second-placed car. People are clearly very excited about the idea of a new family SUV bearing the Alfa Romeo badge, and looking at the concept, it's easy to see why.”

Arnaud Leclerc, head of Alfa Romeo EMEA said, “The Tonale concept signals the future for Alfa Romeo, with the production car set to be the first plug-in hybrid to join the range. It’s humbling to see how its combination of beauty and functionality has captured car buyer’s imaginations and that they are as excited to see the final version on the roads as we are.”

Panda Cross named best crossover of the year by Britain’s “4x4 Magazine”

    • For the fourth consecutive year, Panda Cross wins “Best Crossover” from the UK’s “4x4 Magazine”.
    • Praised by a panel of 4x4 experts for its off-road capability, entertaining drive and engines.
    • Panda has been the leader in Italy for eight years running, together with its sibling the 500, which leads the city car segment in Europe.
    • In 2020, its 40th year, Panda has seen the highest growth ever in its segment in Europe (+3.8%) and the best market share in its history (18%).
“It’s with great pleasure that we accept this award, to crown a memorable year for the Panda. As well as celebrating its 40th anniversary, 2020 was a really packed year: we launched the Panda Hybrid, completely refreshed the line-up and achieved the best market share in history”, said Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat, Lancia & Abarth Brands.

Even better, for the fourth year running, the Panda Cross has been named “Best Crossover 2020” by Britain’s “4x4 Magazine” at its annual 4x4 Awards, fighting off tough competition in an ever-growing sector. The judges praised it for its off-roading capability, engaging drive and its engines.

Alan Kidd, editor of 4x4 Magazine, commented, “The Panda Cross just keeps on winning at our 4x4 Awards. The opposition is fierce, but there’s nothing else to match Fiat’s icon in terms of off-road capability, performance on the road or its distinctive look. People who live in the mountains or get through a bitter winter buy vehicles like this because off-roading forms part of their way of life. It might be small, but the Panda has loads of traction and incredible manoeuvrability. The Panda Cross is the ideal city car that’s ready to turn into a cross-country hero in the blink of an eye”.

4x4 Magazine is the UK’s only dedicated 4x4 and pick-up magazine and its 4x4 of the Year award has been a benchmark in the sector for more than 25 years. A team of 4x4 specialists assess the broad spectrum of vehicles that make up this class, covering everything from comfort and quality to off-road performance and purchase and ownership costs.

This impressive win joins the Fiat Panda’s long list of accomplishments, including being the first car in its segment to win “Car of the Year” in 2004, the first city car to climb to an altitude of 5,200m and reach Everest base camp, and the first city car to feature 4WD technology.
