Ennstal Classic 2018: FCA Heritage competes on Styria's loveliest Alpine roads

  • The 26th edition of the "Ennstal Classic" will be held at Gröbming, in Austria, from 18 to 21 July, on a course covering some of Styria's loveliest Alpine roads. This regularity competition attracts a truly international field, and is famous for not allowing the use of electronic instrumentation.
  • Three cars from the Fiat Heritage collection will be taking part in the event: the race line-up will include the Fiat 124 Sport Spider (1970), and the Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider "Duetto" (1966), fifty years after the Oscar-winning film "The Graduate"
  • The Abarth 2400 Coupé Allemano (1964) owned by Karl Abarth himself - who was born in Austria 110 years ago - will be driven by Anneliese Abarth in the "Grand Prix Gröbming" parade through the streets of the town on Saturday 21 July.
  • The event is sponsored by the Alfa Romeo and Abarth brands. Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio will be on display, as well as the Abarth 124 spider and 695 Rivale.
FCA will be taking part in the 2018 edition of the Ennstal Classic, to be staged in the Styria region from 18 to 21 July. It is the 26th edition of an event founded in 1993 with just 35 cars, which has grown over time to become a major date in the calendar for international classic car enthusiasts. This year, there will be no fewer than 238 competitors taking part.
The distinctive feature of the event, held on the Styria's loveliest Alpine roads, is that all types of electronic instruments are absolutely banned from the competition: only mechanical tripmasters and stopwatches are allowed, consistently with the age of the cars.
Two cars from the Fiat Heritage collection will be taking part in the race: Fiat 124 Sport Spider (1970) and Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider "Duetto" (1966). The first car, driven by actor Rudi Roubinek, was restored at the Officine Classiche in Turin, where FCA Heritage's restoration and certification services are provided, and was exhibited at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2016. Also in the starting line-up will be the "Duetto", a legendary model which this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the award of the Oscar to the film "The Graduate", which won this car its cinema icon status. To celebrate this major anniversary, the Alfa Romeo Spider - from the Museo Storico Alfa Romeo in Arese ( www.museoalfaromeo.com ) - will be driven in the race by an illustrious couple from the world of film: Austrian actors Gregor Bloeb and Nina Proll.

During the event, sponsored by the Alfa Romeo and Abarth, a special stand in the grounds of the Fachschule Gröbming will enable visitors to admire the latest novelties from the range - the Abarth 124 spider, Abarth 695 Rivale and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models will be on show - and the wonderful 2400 Allemano once owned by the legendary Karl Abarth, who was born in Austria 110 years ago. This rare car will then be driven by his widow Anneliese, President of the Karl Abarth Foundation, in the "Grand Prix Gröbming" parade through the streets of the town on Saturday 21 July.

Alfa Romeo 1600 Spider "Duetto" (1966)

The 1600 Spider "Duetto" first appeared in 1966 and surprised everyone with its unusual, unconventional design by Pininfarina, quite different from other versions of the Giulia range due to its low nose and tapered "cuttlefish bone" tail, almost the opposite of the sedan's trademark cut-off rear. Its mechanics were derived from the Giulia Sprint GT, with power boosted to 109 HP at 6000 rpm and wheelbase shortened to 225 cm: its performance and driving pleasure were firmly at the top of its class, with a maximum speed of 182 km/h, rear-wheel drive and independent-wheel suspensions. The Duetto's rise to international fame was assisted by its unforgettable appearance in the film "The Graduate", in which it was driven by Dustin Hoffman. It was produced in four series and various versions up until 1994: a very long career.

Fiat 124 Sport Spider (1970)

The Fiat 124 Sport Spider was presented at the Turin International Motor Show in November 1966, and it was launched on the US market two years later. With rear-wheel drive, the car was fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox, a twin camshaft engine, disc brakes on all four wheels and intermittent windscreen wipers.
The 124 Spider, the "open-top" evolution of Fat's 1960s medium-range saloon car, was extremely successful for a considerable period of time, on both the Italian and the export markets. In fact this model, produced for 19 consecutive years, outlived almost all other sports cars of its time. In the United States alone, over 170,000 Spiders were sold between 1968 and 1985.
The design of the 124 Spider - created by Pininfarina, Fiat's historic partner in the creation of special versions - proved so popular that the vehicle actually underwent only a few minor stylistic updates during its twenty-year production lifetime, and it is still considered one of the major commercial successes of the Turin-based bodyshop.
The model entered for the Austrian competition still proudly displays its original black registration plates and is from the second series, introduced in 1969 and featuring an increase in engine displacement - to 1608 cc - and some stylistic changes, including the two "bumps" in the bonnet and the larger rear light clusters.

Abarth 2400 coupé (1964)

This wonderful coupé, designed by Michelotti, was presented at Geneva in 1959. It was a Gran Turismo version of the Fiat 2100, built at the Allemano plant from 1962 to 1964, known first as the 2200 coupé and, in the last year - when it was built on the Fiat 2300 base - as the 2400 coupé. The straight 6 engine of the 2400, generating 140 HP, powered the car to a top speed of 200 km/h. This model belonged to Karl Abarth himself.

Resounding Success in R-GT and Third Place Overall for Abarth 124 in the Harghita Rally in Romania

  • Florin Tincescu (ROM) and Alina Pop (ROM) shine in the Rumanian Rally Championship again.
  • Finn Juuso Pajuranta and Italian Cosimo Barberini, who is still leading the ranking, won in the Abarth Selenia Trophy on the Mugello Circuit.
The Abarth 124 rally is as fast and competitive as ever and is dominating the spectacular R-GT category this season. In the Harghita Rally, valid for the Rumanian Championship, young Florin Tincescu (ROM) and Alina Pop (ROM) at the wheel of their Bernini Rally team Abarth 124, assertively predominated in the R-GT and the 2WD categories, scoring an excellent third place in the overall ranking. It is the third time this year that an Abarth 124 rally crew steps onto the overall ranking podium, following the two successes of Italian driver Andrea Nucita in the Slovenian Championship.

Tincescu's performance in the tough Rumanian championship is on the rise and follows the fourth place in the overall ranking he took in the Transylvania Rally. The Abarth 124 crew started strong the Harghita Rally, in the same region of the country, and kept up the pace ending third.

"The speedy roads of this race enhanced the great road holding qualities of the Abarth 124 rally on faster bends", said Tincescu. "Race after race, we are showing that this car is at the top of the R-GTs and the fastest two-wheel drive".

Abarth Selenia Trophy in Mugello

The Abarth racing weekend continued on the track with the fourth round of the Abarth Selenia Trophy, this time in Mugello, where Finn Juuso Pajuranta and Italian Cosimo Barberini won at the wheel of their respective Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione. Three drivers are in contention of the title at this point of the championship with young Italian Andrea Mabellini, who was on the podium for both races, joining today's two winners.

It was a hot weekend and not only for the weather. The three drivers fired up the competition scoring times down to the wire already in the qualifiers, that ended with Barberini taking the pole position for a few hundredths of a second. Unfortunately for him, his start in Race1 was not one of the best and he was promptly overtaken by Pajuranta with Mabellini in tow. During the second to last lap Barberini made a mistake that cost him two places, handing over the win to Pajuranta with Mabellini a well-deserved second.

Barberini recovered from the blow winning Race2 and putting up an exciting fight with Pajuranta and Mabellini, who ended in that order.

Noteworthy results of the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse are the win of the women's scoreboard leader Aurora Coria in Race1 and of Filippo Lazzaroni in Race2.

Ducato, Quality and Freedom from Fiat Professional

  • Ducato presents unique quality in terms of comfort, engines, transmissions and safety and has always been naturally ready for motorhome conversion.
  • It has been made in the Sevel Plant in Atessa, Val di Sangro, the largest plant in Europe for light commercial vehicles, since 1981.
  • The plant is also home to the Academy, the Sevel centre of excellence where resources are trained and Team Leaders are continually updated.
  • The Fiat Professional best-seller has been leading the sector for six generations. Today, three motorhomes out of four sold in Europe are Ducato-based, and in the last ten years more than 500.000 families enjoy ther holidays on a Ducato based Motorhome. Not by chance, it has been awarded "Best Motorhome Base" for eleven years.
  • The vehicle is constantly evolving, drawing on extensive experience in the recreational vehicle sector.
  • Ducato is the "Leader in Freedom". Its customer-centred focus is clearly affirmed through a vast range of services, developed with Mopar, to deliver outdoor tourism without a care in the world.
Ducato is made in the Sevel Plant in Atessa, Val di Sangro, Italy, the largest light commercial vehicle plant in Europe. The bases which are converted into motorhomes by expert converters and hit the road as recreational vehicles have been made here since 1981. Six generations of Ducato have rolled off the lines of the plant onto the roads of Europe for the satisfaction of hundreds of thousands of users, merit of its many body variants, the square and regular shape of its loading compartment, its efficient chassis and its car-like driving. Qualities like these make it the best-seller on all major markets across Europe and the ideal base to be converted into a motorhome. Experts are expecting 120,000 new registrations in 2018, which is about 10 per cent increase on last year. Demand is growing year after year on all markets and has totalled approximately 50 per cent over four years.

A record made in Abruzzo region, Italy, on solid foundations

The market leadership of Ducato results from its technological primacy and its ability to anticipate customer needs, with solutions which make the work of converters more efficient and life on-board more pleasant for users. Solutions are chosen to relieve motorhome users from vehicle-related worries so that they can focus on the excitement of their holidays. The Sevel Plant was developed in parallel with Ducato with constant investments in terms of flexibility, quality and manufacturing capability. A little over six hundred people were employed in the Sevel Plant in 1981 and seventy vehicles were made a day. Today, 1200 vehicles in an amazing array of different configurations roll off the lines every day. The plant is one of the most complex in the world in terms of level of specialisation, organisation and implemented work methods. Furthermore, it has earned a Silver medal in the World Class Manufacturing programme which involves over 160 FCA plants in addition to suppliers and multinationals. The Silver medal certifies that high efficiency, organisation, involvement and quality standards are implemented. The plant employs roughly 6,400 people, which reach 12,500 counting the suppliers operating in the district. The average age is about 45 and women make up over 21 per cent of the entire workforce. The plant hosts the Academy, a centre of excellence where resources are trained and Team Leader are continuously updated.
The Academy is the place where people meet to improve training, leadership, simulation and innovation in four different areas. Here it is also possible to learn about future technologies connecting our business in different areas as quality, ergonomy, complexity, workpace.

Ducato, the "Best Motorhome Base"

The particularity of the plant is in its being able to make vehicles "tailor made" for each customer needs. One could even say that there is a specific Ducato for everyone. The combination of bodies, engines, transmissions and liveries means that over 13,000 different versions are offered. The selection is a comprehensive and highly appreciated one. Over 3 million Ducato have been made since 1981 for the widest array of uses, each of which has its own specific priorities. Low running costs are paramount for goods, while comfort is the key for passengers. Flexibility is important for conversions and high quality and level of detail and customization are decisive for motorhome bases, which amounted to approximately 55 per cent of the entire Ducato production in 2017. These standards are evidently fulfilled by Ducato, which this year for the eleventh time was chosen by the readers of the prestigious German magazine Promobil as "Best Motorhome Base", thus reasserting its leadership in the motorhome sector.

Thirty-seven years of success

Thirty-seven years ago, Ducato revolutionised the light commercial vehicle segment and the revolution is still underway. The current, sixth generation has the highest payload in the sector. The exceptionally balanced chassis and specific suspensions for camper vans ensure safety and dynamic behaviour in all road conditions. A large number of active and passive safety devices provide peace of mind, even with the family on board, without ever skimping on comfort.
Today, three out of four motorhomes sold in Europe are Ducato-based and the last ten year more than 500.000 families enjoy their holidays on a Ducagto based motorhome. This leadership reflects the capabilities of the Fiat Professional best-seller for driving the motorhome-product evolution, anticipating the needs of users from the very beginning. For instance, the first Ducato motorhome base implemented many substantial technological improvements capable of adapting to the needs of recreational vehicles. The first was front-wheel drive and transverse engine to clear usable room behind the cab. From generation to generation, each Ducato has introduced innovations aimed at improving recreational vehicles in terms transformability for converters and in terms of usability for camper van users. Not by chance, the Ducato motorhome base has constantly evolved by teaming up with the most important European converters, offering over time special, lower and lighter chassis, wider track, cut and consolidated roof cab, squared shape designed to the exploited in a wider range of ways and, in general, an excellent proportion of volumes and a very favourable ratio between mechanical dimensions and usable space. Ducato has always offered modularity, driveability and versatility, features which - in brief - have ruled its success together with constant innovations smart solutions aimed at improving the quality of life on-board, such as swivelling seats "captain chairs".

The evolution of the approach

In addition to indicating trends, market data are pointing to a new identification of customers who enjoy the lifestyle, values and opportunities offered by recreational vehicles. The approach of motorome users is that of true travellers not simple tourists. Motorhome users are free to set off whenever they want to their preferred destination. Emotions, freedom and flexibility are the secrets of the success of outdoor holidays. What is more, Fiat Professional is dedicated to continuously developing the best-selling motorhome base in Europe alongside increasingly more advanced services to be constantly by the customers' side. The Call Centre, which guarantees professional, non-stop and high-quality service, is the feather in the cap of Customer Care. Fiat Professional can boast a pioneering approach also in the services area. They were the first to launch a toll-free number specifically for motorhomes back in 2007. Today, ten years later, customers who purchase a Ducato-based motorhome step into a world of services designed to accompany them throughout their holidays which is ready to intervene at any time, also simply for tourist information. The excellence of products and services means flexibility and freedom to motorome users and this is why Fiat Professional is "Leader in Freedom".

"Leader in Freedom"

"Leader in Freedom" is a concept that conveys a precise meaning. Freedom is the promise to Customers that Fiat Professional will be on hand with a solution to any problem they may encounter during their holidays. Leader points to the fact that the brand offers a unique, unrivalled series of special services for the motorhome world. Since 2003, a team of professionals has been taking care of motorhome customers and their needs. Over time, the team has expanded, improved and updated their skills to be even closer to customers and their needs.

The ability to listen to customers - which starts in the Customer Care Centre and continues in the Fiat Professional workshops - means being able to respond efficiently to current needs, but also to anticipate them. The service concept extends from product assistance to caring for customers on holiday by keeping in touch with them. Fiat Professional Call Centre in 51 countries across Europe replies to calls made to the toll-free number dedicated to motorhome users 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Twenty Brand Ambassadors quickly solve all types of problems and call the Fiat Professional technical departments if needed.

The promise of peace of mind that Fiat Professional offers to customers also includes Mopar® Vehicle Protection "Maximum Care" Camper allowing them to extend the warranty also for mechanical and electrical components in addition to roadside assistance for up to five years. From this year, the offer can be subscribed within 12 months from the first registration of the vehicle.

Another, not less important theme is the relationship which is established by exploiting all the most recent communication technologies, such as the fiatcamper.com website (available in nine languages and visited over 70 thousand times a time), where motorhome users can collect and check information on the maintenance state of their vehicle, to social media, which provide information and tips to the motorhome community in real time, and the monthly newsletter, which is sent to all outdoor enthusiasts across the EMEA Region.
The strong team spirit of camper van users is channelled in the virtual community of Fiat Professional for Recreational Vehicles, with 56,000 members following the Facebook page dedicated to FiatDucatoCamper.

New identity

The two key notions to be used to speak about Fiat Professional products and services are "constant improvement" and "specialisation". These two concepts are inspiring also the progress of the brand in communications and in creating connections with end customers, that are Recreational Vehicles buyers. Marketing positioning has been perfected and developed over the past years. The focus of communications shifted from describing the uniqueness of products and services to a more complete approach.
Fiat Professional is "Leader in Freedom" because product and service excellence guarantees the maximum flexibility and freedom to users. Its positioning has been consolidated through activities and actions which are consistent across all contacts with customers, from the ten international Recreational Vehicles shows that the brand attends every year to communications on major media and advertising in ten different countries across Europe.
A further step forwards towards consolidating identity and communications from the structural point of view is expressed by goal of addressing customers with the tone of voice of a fully fledged brand, using consistent words and adopting a well-defined visual identity, naturally in line with that of Fiat Professional.
Now a journey starts with the new "Fiat Professional for Recreational Vehicles" logo. Both visually and in the wording, the RV business adds its specialisation - the nature as a dedicated organisation - to the Fiat Professional brand. The new identity will be revealed to customers during the next shows starting from Düsseldorf in August. Fiat Professional will be showing its true nature of leader in the recreational vehicle sector by means of a communication project aimed at creating a brand in a brand.

Adventurous spirit, determination, love for a challenge, tough work, tenacity and strength - these are the values that make Mopar and Elena a truly record-breaking team and are the foundations for the renewed sponsorship agreement with Mopar, that at the beginning of its second year has already seen Elena better her own results and break another world record wearing her new Mopar jersey. On Saturday, June 30 in Passo di Gavia, she completed 10 uphill courses in 22 hours and 3 minutes, covering a total distance of 322 kilometres and a total difference of level of 13 kilometres.

A Jeep Renegade Longitude, especially kitted out with Jeep® Genuine Accessories by Mopar, will be accompanying her in all her sporting endeavours and free time to satisfy all her performance and transport related needs. The vehicle has cool satin grey mirror caps, rear light cluster bezel and grille. The same colour is picked up on the bonnet decal and the US Army decal on the doors and inside in the dashboard trim. Many of these details can be configured on the vehicle when it is purchased, courtesy of the innovative Mopar Custom Shop process which allows them to the fitted directly at the production plant, meeting the high quality standards which are expected. So, the car reaches the dealership already customised and ready to go.

Its off-road appearance and capacities are emphasised by a 1-inch lift kit, which includes 16-inch black alloy rims and oversized tyres, front and rear mud flaps and side skirts. The vehicle sports the Jeep® Performance Parts badge that identifies the Genuine Accessories specifically developed by Mopar to ensure maximum protection and the best off-road performance.
Indispensable functional accessories include a handy cargo liner and all-weather rubber mats designed to ensure the best comfort and protection. The bicycle rack is of course on the roof.

Elena Novikova is preparing to set new records with Mopar. She has just won the European Championship Timed UMCA 24 H "SOLO" on July 14 and 15 in Dubrovnik, Slovenia, ranking first (fourth in the overall ranking counting both men and women). She covered 715 kilometres in 24 hours at an average speed of 29.56 km/h. New challenges are in store. From July 21 to 28, there is Iron Bike, one of the most gruelling stage competitions in the world, followed by the MTB Marathon Bike Brianza and the race on the tarmac of the Monza racing track in September.
The champion will also be attending the main Mopar events and motor shows throughout 2018.

Elena Novikova and Mopar: a winning team. Like in all sports, teams need all the support they can get. Alfa Romeo Named Best of Show at the 68th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

At the 2018 edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the coveted gold ribbon that marks out the "Best of Show" car was placed on the magnificent deep blue bodywork of a 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring berlinetta. The Italian masterpiece fought off competition from 209 cars, from 17 countries, on display on the eighteenth fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, in California. Before being proclaimed "Best of Show" the car triumphed in its class and it also received two other major awards: the "Charles A. Chayne Trophy" and the "J. B. & Dorothy Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car" prize.

The car, first seen at the 1938 Berlin Motor Show, differs from later 8C 2900B Touring models with its more steeply raked grille and lack of running boards, and recently received a full restoration to return it to its original specification.

This is the third time in the history of Pebble Beach that the Alfa Romeo brand has taken home the Best of Show award, and every time it has been with the 8C 2900B model with Touring bodywork: first in 1988 with a spider version and then in 2008 with a coupé.

“This Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring has all that one would wish for in a car—speed, style and, frankly, sex appeal,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “The Touring styling is simply magical, and to top it off it makes all the right noises!"
