The Abarth 124 rally Shines in Romania with Tincescu-Pop's Overall Fourth Place in the Sibiu Rally

  • Romanians Florin Tincescu and Alina Pop reasserted their standing in their national Championship by scoring another win in the R-GT category for Abarth 124 rally.
  • In Monza, the Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione put up a great show. Race1 was won by Finn Pajuranta and Race2 by Italian Mabellini.
It was another great racing weekend for the Abarth 124 rally in Romania, with the fourth place in the overall ranking scored in the Sibiu Rally by Florin Tincescu and Alina Pop, who reasserted their standing among the leaders of the hard-fought Romanian Rally Championship.

In the Sibiu Rally, characterized by very fast special stages on mountain roads, the Bernini Rally Team Abarth 124 kept a fast pace allowing the Romanian crew to dominate among the R-GTs and even to set their eyes on a very prestigious absolute result. The general balance of the spider with the scorpion badge, combined with excellent set-up and the rear wheel drive, proved to be very effective, particularly on the most twisted parts of the course, where the remarkable agility and manoeuvrability of the car came into play.

"With this result we confirmed the value of the Abarth 124 rally on all types of courses", said Tincescu. "Here, we had to exploit all the power delivered out from the tightest corners and we found the perfect set-up to be fast."

Just as spectacular was the show on the Monza circuit for the sixth and penultimate round of the Abarth Selenia Trophy with the Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione and the Abarth 500 Assetto Corse as the leading stars.

At an average speed of almost 160 km per hour, the 2018 title contenders staged a number of breath-taking duels on the razor's edge in Monza. The first race was won by the Finn Juuso Pajuranta, ahead of Italian Cosimo Barberini, leader of the general ranking of the championship, by a hair's breadth. Race 2 was won by young Italian Andrea Mabellini with Barberini second once again. Merit of these two well-deserved second places, Barberini is still leading the general ranking of the Trophy Abarth Selenia with a score of 232 points, against Pajuranta's 207 and Mabellini's 202.

This means that the championship title will be awarded in the last heat of the Abarth Selenia Trophy, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 27-28 on the Mugello circuit in Tuscany.

Again in Monza the members of the Scorpionship, the exclusive community of the Scorpion with more than 100.000 members, and the local Abarth clubs crowded the paddock and the hospitality Abarth area. They enjoyed the unique opportunity to meet the drivers, watch the mechanics preparing the cars, experience the pre-race excitement and enjoy the atmosphere of the legendary Monza paddock.

Melfi Plant prepares for production of new Jeep Renegade Plug-in Hybrid

The FCA Melfi Plant in Italy is beginning preparations to produce the Jeep Renegade Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) scheduled for market launch in early 2020. The Renegade PHEV will be produced alongside the Renegade and 500X full combustion engine products that are currently produced at the Melfi vehicle assembly plant.

The pre-production units of the new Jeep Renegade PHEV are scheduled in 2019. The investment for the new engine launch equates to more than €200M and also includes a strong commitment by FCA for training all workers on the application of this new technology. The Plant facilities involved in the production will also be modernized accordingly

"With over 742,000 Renegades produced to date in Italy, the Melfi plant and the Renegade are the ideal location and the perfect product to launch the PHEV, further strengthening the offer of this highly successful Jeep", said Pietro Gorlier, Chief Operating Officer EMEA region.

During the FCA Capital Markets Day on June 1, when the 2018-2022 business plan was presented to the financial community, it was stated that one of the most important change factors addressed in the strategic plan is electrification. Investments during the plan period result in a portfolio of technical solutions that will enable FCA to comply with the regulatory requirements in each sales region. At the same time, the technology will also be applied to enhance the specific strengths of each brand.

The Renegade PHEV is the next step in FCA's roll-out of Electrification, following the launches of the PHEV Pacifica Minivan and the mild-hybrid e-Torque technology launched on the Ram 1500 truck earlier this year. By 2022, FCA will offer a total of 12 electric propulsion systems (BEV, PHEV, full-hybrid and mild-hybrid) in global architectures. Thirty different models will be equipped with one or more of these systems.

An Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Touring Superleggera Coupé from 1948 wins the "Best of Show" award at Concours d’Elégance in Belgium’s Zoute Grand Prix 2018

The distinctive Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Coupé, designed by Touring Superleggera in 1948, wins the prestigious « Best of Show », at Zoute Grand Prix 2018

During the Concours d'Elégance organized in the context of Zoute Grand Prix 2018 (from 4th to 7th October), the most prestigious motoring event devoted to vintage cars in Belgium, the jury, who is under charmainship of Mr. Philip Kantor, Head of Department Motor Cars at Bonhams Europe, has granted the "Best of Show" award to an Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Coupé from 1948, a vehicle designed by Milan's Touring Superleggera.

The car belongs to collector Johan van Puyvelde, who says the merit of victory lies in the three main qualities he sees in his car : the distinctive appearance of the 6C 2500 SS, designed by Milan's Superleggera in 1948, its fantastic chassis originally conceived before World War II (and on which Italian pilot Tazio Nuvolari competed) and its unique grey exterior color that makes it a very distinctive model for its era.

The jury praised the exceptional qualities of the 6C 2500 SS Touring which signed here one of its most remarkable works for the Alfa Romeo brand, whose models have always been conceived with latest technologies and elegant design in mind.

The Alfa Romeo brand is attending each edition of Zoute Grand Prix (now in its ninth year), which consists of the most prestigious motoring event in Belgium, organized alongside the Belgian seaside. More than 200.000 visitors from Belgium and abroad attended the four days of the event. Besides the Concours d'Elégance itself, there's a rally aimed at vintage cars, a GT Tour (on Sunday, for the latest supercars to parade), an auction by Bonhams and all premium, sports and luxury brands attend the event to display their latest models.

Alfa Romeo's Pavillion was exhibiting the newest models of the range (among other the brand new B-Tech versions of Giulia and Stelvio), while a vintage 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider was also displayed. Next edition of Zoute Grand Prix will happen between 10th to 13th October, 2019.

FCA Sales in Italy during the Third Quarter

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles sales in Italy totaled 95,000 vehicles during the third quarter of 2018, with market share at 25.7%. In July and August, sales growth was significantly higher than the average, reflecting introduction of the WLTP regulation with an expected subsequent correction in September.In addition to the impact of the new regulations, FCA's sales results for the quarter reflected, as already noted in July and August, the increasing contribution toward the latter part of the year of retail and Pure Fleet sales.For the nine months year-to-date, FCA sales in Italy totaled 398,000 vehicles and market share was 26.7%.In this particularly complex market environment, Jeep brand achieved a record market share for the quarter (4.7%) with sales increasing 55% year-over-year. The brand also posted a strong year-to-date performance with Italian sales up 87% over the same period in 2017 to 65,400 vehicles.
FCA performed well in the September rankings with a total of four models in the top ten. These included the Fiat Panda, Lancia Ypsilon, Fiat 500 and Jeep Renegade.

The introduction, from September 1st, of emissions regulations requiring all new vehicles to be Euro 6C or 6D-TEMP compliant resulted in atypical market conditions during the summer quarter. In fact, July and August sales were significantly higher than the average (also reflecting introduction of the WLTP regulation) with a subsequent correction in September. Accordingly, the year-over-year comparison is for the full quarter as this provides a more meaningful result. This situation will stabilize in the fourth quarter with the depletion of Euro 6B stock.

During the third quarter, FCA sold 95,000 vehicles with Italian market share at 25.7% for the period.
Year-to-date, Group sales totaled 398,000 vehicles and market share was 26.7%.
This result was driven by FCA's leading models and the Group maintained a strong presence in the rankings once again in September with a total of four models in the top ten. These included the Fiat Panda, Lancia Ypsilon, Fiat 500 and Jeep Renegade.

Jeep posted another strong quarter with more than 17,300 vehicles sold. This represented a 55% year-over-year increase with market share up 190 basis points to 4.7%, the brand's all-time record in Italy.
Year-to-date, brand sales were up 87% to more than 65,400 vehicles and market share was 4.4%.
The Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade both posted positive results for the quarter. The Compass continued among the leaders in its segment with an 8% segment share, while the Renegade ranked in the Italian top ten for the period and achieved a 12.9% segment share.

Alfa Romeo continued its positive momentum with more than 10,100 vehicles sold during the quarter and market share increasing 20 basis points to 2.7%.
Year-to-date, sales were up 6% to more than 37,400 vehicles and market share was 2.5%.
The Stelvio continued as leader in its segment with a 12.3% share for the quarter.

Fiat brand sales totaled more than 59,500 vehicles for the quarter and market share was 16.1%.
Year-to-date, brand sales totaled 260,000 vehicles and market share was 17.4%.
The Panda was overall market leader for the quarter and also first in the A segment with a 36.9% share. The 500 was fourth overall and second in the A segment. Together, these the two models held a combined 48.5% share of the A segment. The Tipo was leader in the C segment with an 11.5% share, while the 500L continued as one of the best-sellers in its segment with a 25.6% share. The new version of the 500X has already proven popular with customers and ranked among the leaders in its segment with an 11% share. Finally, the Qubo was leader in its segment for the period with a 40% share.

Lancia sales totaled 8,100 vehicles for the quarter and market share was 2.2%.
Year-to-date, sales totaled nearly 35,300 vehicles and market share was 2.4%.
The Ypsilon posted another positive result and continued as one of the best-selling vehicles in the Italian B segment.

To celebrate the special sporting bond with Targa Florio is firmly rooted in history, Abarth introduced the new Abarth 595 range with a preview for the fans of the "Cursa".
In addition to taking part in the prestigious event with three vintage models picked from the FCA Heritage collection, Abarth organised an exciting test drive experience at the wheel of the new 595 range on the roads of the oldest race in the world and the new 595 range was showcased for the first time in the heart of Palermo.
The brand's icon has evolved in line with both aspects of its dual personality, performance and style, the ingredients on which every Abarth, of past and present, is based, and which transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.
"Karl Abarth was closely associated with the Targa Florio, starting right after the War," explains Luca Napolitano, Head of EMEA Fiat and Abarth brand. "Sicily's winding roads seem to be tailor-made for showing off his racing cars' qualities. So the Scorpion and the Targa share a close bond, and a history of racing successes and memorable anecdotes. After all, anyone admiring these historic cars that won Abarth its status as a racing legend will easily appreciate how, over the years, the tough testing ground of racing has shaped the priceless heritage of style and performance that has given us the cars of today. The New Abarth 595 Range - Performance and Style

"The Abarth 595, the evolution of the iconic model of the brand, generated a lot of buzz after its launch a few weeks ago", continued Luca Napolitano. "Through carefully calculated technical changes, meticulous attention to detail and the choice of fine materials, it strongly expresses the two sides of the brand's personality, performance and style, perfectly represented by the two iconic Competizione and Turismo versions: for clients, two ways of entering and experiencing the Abarth world."
At the centre of the new 595 range are the Competizione and Turismo versions, which express Abarth's two personalities. The 595 Competizione is more "radical" and is designed for those with a passion for performance and uncompromising sportiness, while the 595 Turismo is based on the values of style and comfort typical of Italian GT cars, with impeccably styled details, leather interior and Urban Pack.
On the new 595 Competizione, the main innovation is the new Record Monza exhaust, fitted as standard and complete with an active valve controlled by the Sport button. Pressing the Sport button opens the exhaust valve and the engine rumble becomes deeper and bolder. The driver can choose a gentleman driver engine sound or a tougher, sportier - and more traditionally Abarth - roar. A new "Adrenalina Green" livery has been designed for the 595 Competizione, combined with a black roof and underlining its strong links to the racing world.
Abarth 595 Turismo is intended for those who consider comfort essential even in a high-performance car. In its interior, the meticulously finished Abarth leather upholstery is a perfect match for the Turismo's elegant style. All enhanced by the new Urban pack, which comprises parking sensors, rain sensor and dusk sensor: equipment intended to make everyday driving easier and less stressful. The Turismo is also available in a new, elegant, exclusive matte "Asfalto Grey" colour.
The range continues with the Abarth entry-level 595. With a power rating of 145 HP, the car offers all the standard equipment needed to ensure the driving pleasure typical of the creations of the brand with the scorpion badge, including flat-bottom steering wheel with central crosshairs insert and the "Sport" button which, in this case, modifies the maximum torque output and the power steering and accelerator settings.
The line-up is completed by the two special series, the 595 Pista and 695 Rivale. The former is oriented entirely towards performance, reflected by the inclusion in its equipment of 7" Abarth Telemetry, allowing constant monitoring of performance, of the new Record Monza exhaust and Koni FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) rear suspensions, which ensure even better road holding, handling and stability, in total safety. The second special series, on the other hand, springs from Abarth's partnership with Riva, the iconic world-famous Italian yacht builder; it is the most sophisticated Abarth creation ever and the perfect blend of elegance and performance.
Hatchback or convertible, the new 595 range features five versions (595, 595 Pista, 595 Turismo, 595 Competizione and 695 Rivale) with power levels from 145 to 180 HP, all Euro 6D-TEMP compliant, to satisfy all customer needs.

From rally or circuit racing to the roads of everyday driving with the Scorpion brand

It is in the racing world that the brand first tested and perfected its technological innovations, ready for transfer to its on-road cars, to offer unbeatable performance, safety and reliability. The racing tradition and its successes are rooted in history, reflected by the many class wins achieved in the Targa Florio, especially with the agile Abarth 1000 SP sports cars, ideally suited to the Madonìe roads, which enabled many gentlemen drivers to achieve very impressive standings even in the overall competition. The victories of the Abarth 124 Rally models in the last Seventies editions were also memorable. Since the Targa Florio was transformed from a speed race to a rally in 1978, Abarth has recorded several overall victories: two with the Abarth 131 Rally, in 1979 with Adartico Vudafieri and in 1980 with Mario Pasetti, and two in 2003 and 2004 with the Fiat Punto Super 1600, driven in both cases by Paolo Andreucci, who also won in 2006 in the Abarth Grande Punto S2000. The same model was first to pass the finish line in 2009 with Luca Rossetti at the wheel. Last but not least, in the two latest editions of the Targa Florio all the thrills of the past have been brought back to life by the racing comeback of the Abarth 124 rally, created to turn in spectacular performances in this speciality.
"Today the Abarth 124 rally is proving the car to beat in the R-GT category, having already won the FIA World Championship in the R-GT category with one race to spare with French pair Raphael Astier and Frédéric Vauclaire, and monopolizing the top 5 places in the class's rankings," Luca Napolitano concluded. "So far this season, it has clocked up about 40 category wins in the 12 national and international championships where it is competing. And this same winning model is offered to the general public in the on-road version: the Abarth 124 GT. This is an adrenaline-charged special series based on the Abarth 124 which combines two personalities: coupé style and the guts, dynamism and joy of driving that only a genuine rear-wheel drive roadster can provide. So we decided to make a dream come true for fans attending the Targa Florio 2018, who were able to admire and test drive it, savouring its scorching acceleration and immense road-holding on even the twistiest roads: a real connoisseur's car."
Last but not least, we must also remember that Abarth is also a star of circuit racing with the Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione and Abarth 500 Assetto Corse cars competing this year in the tenth edition of the Abarth Selenia Trophy, and the Italian and German F4 championships, in which it equips the Formula 4 racing cars with the high-performance 180HP Abarth 1.4 litre engine.

At the Targa Florio, three historic Abarth cars from the FCA Heritage collection

FCA Heritage, the Group department dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the historic legacy of the FCA Italian brands, selected three fine Abarth cars from its collection to compete in the "Targa Florio Classica", the regularity rally for historic cars: the Abarth 2400 coupé (1964), the Autobianchi A112 Abarth 58 HP (1974), and the Fiat 500 (1974) upgraded with the new "Abarth Classiche 595 Conversion Kit". They each represent one of the three great "categories" of the brand's output of road cars: the 2400 with Allemano bodywork is a splendid example of Abarth's ability as an independent constructor of high-end GT cars, while the feisty A112 recalls Abarth's entry into the Fiat Racing Department, after its 1971 acquisition. Last but not least, the quick, agile Fiat 500, upgraded with the new 595 transformation kit produced by FCA Heritage, pays homage to the glorious years when Abarth created its famous tuned-up versions of small-displacement Fiat cars. What's more, to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of Karl Abarth (Vienna, 15 November 1908 - 23 October 1979), the Sicilian event was honoured by the presence of two figures of symbolic importance for the brand, namely Anneliese Abarth, who took part in the starting parade in the 2400 Coupé once owned by her husband, and Eris Tondelli, historic Abarth racing and test driver, who worked on the development of the 595 cars in the Sixties.

The many special editions include 500 by Diesel which was the first of a long series and was launched exactly ten years ago, 500C by Gucci in 2011, 500 Riva in 2016 and the 500-60esimo and Anniversario created to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of the iconic Fiat. Today, the new 500 Collezione is taking the place of the model presented in spring. Not unlike the most prestigious fashion houses, the 500 is also presenting two fashion collections to reflect the seasons.

The new palette of seductively elegant hues

Available in two versions, hatchback with standard glass sunroof or exclusive convertible with grey soft top, the new 500 Collezione sports unique and original liveries, like the striking two-tone Opera Burgundy and Carrara Grey combo called "Brunello" that evokes the glamour of fashion and the colours of autumn. The car is also available with one-colour Opera Burgundy, Carrara Grey, Vesuvio Black paint jobs. The brand-new Cortina Grey is appearing for the first time on this special edition. The exterior lines are embellished by a chrome-plated moulding on the bonnet and by a copper-coloured beauty line, which matches the finish of the standard 16-inch alloy wheels. Finally, the elegance of the car is sealed by the cursive, chrome-plated "Collezione" badge which adds a stylish touch on the boot lid and reasserts the continuity of this model with the spring version.

Style, technology and engines

The interiors also hint to the world of fashion in the black and burgundy pinstripe seats with black vinyl top and 500 logo embroidered in burgundy. A copper-coloured line stands out on the dashboard in matching body colour to echo the exterior beauty line. The black mats are distinguished by the "Collezione" logo, also embroidered in burgundy. Style and elegance can be taken everywhere with the special copper colour key cover by Mopar® sporting the "Collezione" badge.
Striking looks meet technology in the new 500 special edition which offers parking sensors and rain and dusk sensors as standard equipment to meet the demands of customers who desire comfort, practicality and safety. The equipment is designed to make daily driving easier and more comfortable.
The new Fiat 500 Collezione also comes with a host of optional features, such as Uconnect 7" HD LIVE radio, with Apple CarPlay integration and Android AutoTM compatibility, integrated navigation with TomTom maps, the largest 7" TFT display in its category and Beats Audio Hi-Fi system for a premium listening experience.
Finally, there are two E6D petrol engines to choose from - the tried and tested 1.2 69 hp engine, also available with dual petrol and LPG feeds, Dualogic robotic gearbox and paddle shift and the 85 hp TwinAir 0.9 cm3 engine.
